Center Pole Bevel Gear "Bull" Gear & Crankshaft Pinions
Although Herschell used many different styles of center bevel gear, AG&B has most patterns in stock. One upgrade we saw in some of the gears from the factory was a height adjuster screw. We install this screw on all of our center gears of this style. 8" or 10" poles, 12, 14 or 16 sections, we have the gear. All gear material starts out as 4140 steel.
Because your crankshaft gears are soft cast iron, you will need to purchase a set of crankshaft pinion gears with the center gear.
Our pinions do not have the old set screw or pin design. We have installed internal taper-loc bushings to assist in placement on the shaft and for long-term holding ability. The taper-loc bushings are supplied with the pinion. All gear material starts out as 4140 steel.
The center gear and pinions are match hardened for the gear ratio to extend their life.

Herschell Section Gears & Drive Shaft Pinion
Herschell made many different variations of section gear, both in number and in style. Fortunately we have accumulated patterns for most of the common styles. Uncommon styles are not a problem, but samples or simple drawings would have to be provided before manufacture. The originals were soft cast iron and had a problem with cracking during shock load or drop age. AG&B only manufactures precision steel replacement gears.
AG&B section gears start out as a solid ring of 4140 certified steel. Once trued on our machine as a complete ring, the ring is then stress relieved. After that the ring the sectioned and set up on our machines as a complete sectioned ring. The teeth are then cut. This makes for an absolute true ring of steel.
Herschell Drive Shaft Pinion Gear
Because your drive shaft pinion gear is cast iron, you will also need to replace your drive pinion with a steel pinion. AG&B makes their drive pinions out of certified 4140 steel. Instead of a simple taper-key or setscrew we supply the pinion with a bi-loc bushing to lock to the shaft.
The pinion is match hardened to the section gear.

Herschell Carousel Crown and Hub Bearings

Crown Bearings
There are 3 stock sizes and several variations for the thrust bearing we have found for these carousels. The 3 stock sizes are a shelf available bearing. It includes 2 match plates and a roller bearing thrust. The variations require shop time to conform them to a shelf available bearing.
The center pin bearing is a steel pin with a brass or bronze bushing. AG&B can supply a replacement bushing that would need to be matched to the diameter of the pin. We need the size both OD and ID with length to supply the bushing. A local machine shop can then fit the bushing to the pin.
You also can send the crown to us to have it upgraded. We install a precision roller bearing instead of the bushing. We strongly suggest upgrading of a roller bearing for any permanent mount carousel. AG&B supplies with the permanent mount roller bearing an automatic lubrication so maintenance is never an issue.

Hub Bearings
  
AG&B can supply original cage roller bearings for your machine: 8" or 10" pole. We also offer new precision fit cage bearings. This requires your center pole hub and sweep hub to be machined true. The difference in size supplied to us for the custom bearing. We allow .0040 for tolerance. We suggest the parts be sent to our shop for this custom bearing. AG&B is not responsible for dimensions sent that do not fit.
In worst-case applications we would have to manufacture a new hub bearing or sweep sleeve if too much material will be lost in the truing of the parts. Still this sleeve is much cheaper then the manufacture of a totally new part.

Early Open Gear Bevel Gear Drive and Pinion.
There are several styles of gearboxes: open and closed with different ratios and seals, hand operated and automatic.
AG&B can make any gear for these boxes and supply a replacement seal or fit an available
seal to the old box.
The most common size for this gear is a 18" gear with 54 teeth with a 5" 12 tooth pinion.
