Classic Carousel Gears

Amusement Gear and Bearing (AG&B) has made custom gears for most every carousel manufacturer. AG&B only supplies precision cut hardened steel gears as replacements for the old soft cast iron gears. With all gears the steel certificates come with the gear. All paperwork of any other processes involved in manufacture such as x-ray and stress relieving are provided as documentation for you and governing agencies.
Center Pole Gears (Bull Gear)
AG&B can make any bevel gear up to 80" one piece or two piece, pitch and cut for any style carousel. All steel starts out as 4140 steel before cutting. AG&B can make your old one-piece gear as a new two-piece gear. This saves thousands of dollars in the dismantling of the whole carousel. Gear replacement can be days instead of weeks with this upgrade.
Because your crankshaft pinions are soft cast iron, you will need new crankshaft pinions manufactured from hardened steel. AG&B starts with 4140 steel then match hardens the pinions to the bevel gear for longevity. AG&B also installs internal taper-loc bushings to attach the pinion to the shaft for better locking ability and adjustability.

Section Gear (Sister Gear) & Drive Shaft Pinion Gear
AG&B section gears start out as a solid ring of 4140 certified steel. Once trued on our machine as a complete ring, the ring is then stress relieved. The teeth are then cut. This makes for an absolute true ring of steel.
Drive Shaft Pinion Gear
Because your drive shaft pinion gear is cast iron, you will also need to replace your drive pinion with a steel pinion. AG&B makes drive pinions out of certified 4140 steel. Instead of a simple taper-key or setscrew, we supply the pinion with a bi-loc bushing to loc to the shaft.
On full-size park carousels 48' and larger, we can make exact replacements if ordered. We recommend upgrading to a 25% larger face size in most cases. Our engineering shows the original gears were undersized to the rotating mass with today's larger customer as compared to the early 1900s.

Classic Carousel Crown and Hub Bearings
Every classic carousel has a different style crown bearing. They even changed within the manufacturer from year to year. AG&B can repair any bearing. We also have the ability to replace the bearing with shelf available items. From dealing with every manufacture of carousel, we know the downfalls and inadequacies within the machine. Custom Carousel Crankshafts
This is the biggest problem with old carousels: broken crankshafts. AG&B doesn't just replace the old with new without finding out the answer to the question "Why did it break?".
We have found that the original "bent style" crankshaft was not designed to handle the additional weight of today's customers. In 1900, the average customer had the weight of 135lbs. Today, we use 180lbs; however, it is not uncommon to have 250lb. customers riding the carousel.
AG&B has engineered an in-line welded crank that can handle the stress of the additional weight. Welded then completely stress relieved gives the steel a memory of a straight line as opposed to a bent crank. Also it allows a pure 90-degree angel as opposed to a gradual 90-degree bend in a bent shaft.
In the case of a 3 or 4 row carousels, the in-line steel needs to be upgraded to a larger dimension to handle the weight.

Fluid and Hand Clutch Repair and Replacement
Where do you go to repair your hand clutch? Amusement Gear and Bearing. We can reline the clutch and resurface the disc. If necessary we can make all new parts to keep you running.
We can still repair some old fluid couplings or supply new replacements. They're getting hard to come by, but we have sources you may not have. The old fluid system is still the best for carousels and many other rides. Let us try and help you get your ride running like new.
